The Digital Product Passport is coming. But where should manufacturers start?

The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) is becoming a key element of future product compliance. The first mandatory passport will apply to certain battery categories from February 2027, with additional product groups expected to follow.

The DPP will make key product information accessible directly from the physical product through a digital identification carrier such as a QR code or NFC tag. Depending on the product category, this information may include product identification, origin, sustainability, repairability and lifecycle data. The passport will apply at model, batch or item level. This level is set category by category.

To prepare, manufacturers should focus on two areas:

1. Product data

Product data management is not a one-off project. It requires continuous enrichment, maintenance and compliance monitoring.

French Data Channel supports manufacturers in structuring and preparing their product data for future DPP requirements.

2. Product identification

Each physical product will need a digital identification carrier, such as a QR code or NFC tag, enabling access to the relevant product information.

SealTrust helps manufacturers ensure that product information remains accessible, trustworthy and secure throughout the product lifecycle.

The DPP is not a future project. Manufacturers should start building the foundations today: reliable product data and trustworthy product identification.
